🧠 Deep-Dive: Pirate Metrics

I’ve been revisiting the Pirate Metrics Framework. It’s the AARRR model Dave McClure came up with years ago, the idea is simple.

You break the user journey into five stages: acquisition, activation, retention, referral, and revenue.

It forces you to ask the right questions:

  • How are people finding us (acquisition)?

  • Are they actually hitting the aha moment (activation)?

  • Do they come back (retention)?

  • Do they tell others (referral)?

  • Do we make money in a sustainable way (revenue)?

When you don’t track this flow, you can’t see where the leaks are.

Maybe you’re good at getting signups but nobody sticks.
Maybe people love the product but never share it.

Without this, I think like most founders, you’ll just keep guessing so I’d say this isn’t a nice-to-have framework. It’s the foundation.

Once you map your funnel and measure each stage, you can finally stop arguing about opinions. That’s when growth becomes less about luck.
