There’s a term in software called the ā€œcoding duck.ā€

When a developer gets stuck, they grab a literal rubber duck, put it on the desk, and explain the code to it. Step by step. Out loud. 🐄

Obviously not to get advice from the duck (I’m sure some would do it every now and then) but just to force clarity.

Because the moment you try to explain what you built, you kind of hear the issues, you notice your assumptions. You catch the ā€œwait, that doesn’t make senseā€ parts.

Trust me, over many years of product management in my career, most bugs don’t survive a clean explanation.

And honestly, most startup problems don’t either.

Founders need the same thing.

🐄 A Startup Duck.

Not a mentor. Not a cofounder. Not a friend you can impress. Not an investor you can perform for. Simply a neutral object that makes you tell the truth.

Because the biggest waste in startups is not building the wrong feature. It’s living inside a fake sense of unrealistic thinking for too long.

You can work 14 hours a day and still be stuck, if your answers are not honest with yourself. So here’s a simple habit: once a week, talk to your Startup Duck for 15 minutes.

To begin with, you can use these 3:

  • What problem are you solving? Who are your customers? What pain do the have? Why is this a problem? Have you spoken to (if yes, how many) any customers yet?

  • How do you make money? What do customers pay for? When do they pay? Why co they keep paying? What makes them stop?

  • How do you get new customers? Is there a place where they already are? How do they actually show up? Do different customers types come along differently? What’s the path from interest to payment? How repeatable is this?

šŸ‘‰ When you talk in third-person, you stop protecting your ego. You stop defending yesterday’s decisions. You stop trying to sound impressive.
